BARTLEY GEL VARNISH
Bartley
is the originator of the first gel varnish. Originally sold only as a
companion to their excellent furniture reproduction kits, Bartley has made
the product available to the consumer. Finishing gets no easier than this
product. Its gel consistency makes it an easy to apply, low-odor and
drip-proof finish. Simply apply the varnish over stained or natural wood,
let dry (approximately 6 hours). Just build the surface to the depth and
luster you like. Normally no sanding is required between coats, but steel
wool or Mirlon gray may be used to smooth out any problem areas. Product may
be tinted with Ronan Japan Colors or TransTint
Dyes for custom colors.

BARTLEY PASTE WOOD
FILLERS
Bartley's Oil-based Grain Fillers provide a filled grain finish on open grained woods like oak,
mahogany, ash, walnut and many tropical woods such as paduak, teak and
rosewood.
Available in three colors, this product
will provide a smooth base for finish topcoats. Designed as a companion to
their gel stain and varnish, the product is compatible with most other
finishes, including lacquer, polyurethane and our water base products.
Bartley recommends using the product before staining and sanding the filler
back to the level when it's dry. However, many finishers prefer to use
filler over a light washcoat such as 1 lb. cut dewaxed shellac or thinned
sealer or finish. This minimizes the tendency of the filler to color the
intermediate grain areas and makes the filler easier to apply and wipe off
cleanly. We also recommend this technique when using dye stains.

Use the Dark Filler on any wood to
emphasize the grain. To keep the intermediate grain areas as light as
possible use a washcoat (1 pound cut dewaxed shellac or finish thinned to
about 10% solids).

The Light Filler is a reddish-brown
color that will add warmth to walnut and mahogany, particularly when not
used with a washcoat. On mahogany without a washcoat it helps blend the
color of the pores to the intermediate reddish-brown areas.

The Natural Filler is formulated to
dry translucent and fill the grain without adding any color. Under some
finishes it may show as a whitish color so test it on darker woods like
walnut and mahogany. Typically the Natural is used by finishers who like
to custom tint their colors (with our Japan colors). Wash coating has little
aesthetic effect, though it does make the filler easier to wipe off cleanly.
BARTLEY GEL STAINS
Bartley Gel Stains are carefully
selected colors used to enhance the beauty and richness of any wood. Like
other gel stains, they are a good product to use when splotching is a
problem on woods like pine and cherry. They also excel as a stain over dyes,
to even out color, enhance pores or provide an antique effect. The stains
are designed to allow multiple coats without obscuring the grain.
All Bartley gel stains are low odor,
lightfast and can be used under a variety of topcoats, including water base
products. The standard colors can be tinted with TransTint
Dye Colors or Ronan Japan Colors.
